Ofcom Proposes new Drone Detection Radar Licence

The regulator says the licence would support the use of radar technology to detect unauthorised drones, addressing growing concerns around security risks, surveillance and disruption caused by malicious drone use.

NHS Drone Network Takes Flight Across Southwest London
DRONELIFE reports that the NHS’s South West London Pathology (SWLP) is expanding its drone delivery network after a successful pilot that has already transported thousands of pathology samples between healthcare facilities. The service, developed with healthcare logistics company Apian and drone operator Wing, currently connects the Nelson Health Centre in Raynes Park with St George’s Hospital in Tooting, cutting journey times to just over three minutes and supporting faster diagnostic testing for patients.
SWLP serves around 1.8 million people and processes approximately 51 million samples each year, and plans to extend drone operations to additional hospitals and primary care sites across southwest London. The organisation says drone deliveries have been up to 85% faster than road transport, up to 23% cheaper than urgent courier services on some routes and can reduce carbon emissions by as much as 98%, helping the NHS improve efficiency, sustainability and patient care.

Record-Breaking Drone Signals New Era for High-Speed Interceptors
TechRadar reports that Germany’s Quantum Systems Group has unofficially set a new airspeed record for an electric drone, with its Apex Recordhunter aircraft reaching 699 km/h (434 mph) during internal testing. If independently verified, the achievement would surpass the current recognised record of 657.59 km/h (409 mph). The company says a formal attempt to secure recognition from Guinness World Records and the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale is expected in the coming weeks.

DJI Pushes Drone Capabilities to New Heights on Mount Everest

Manna Sets Its Sights on America’s Drone Delivery Market
Reuters reports that Irish drone delivery company Manna has begun a major push into the United States, launching its first full-scale U.S. operation in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The company expects 90% of the city’s residents to be able to access autonomous drone deliveries within the next year and plans to establish 40 operating bases across Tulsa by mid-2027. Manna says commercial flights will begin within the next two months, supported by existing partnerships with DoorDash and Uber Eats.
According to Reuters, Manna believes the U.S. Southwest will become a key testing ground for proving the commercial scalability of drone delivery services. Having already completed more than 300,000 deliveries and recently secured $50 million in funding, Manna is also exploring further growth opportunities in other U.S. cities, as well as future expansion into the UK and the United Arab Emirates.

Dudley Expands Drone Strategy to Tackle Anti-Social Behaviour
According to a BBC report, Dudley Council is considering purchasing additional drones and training more pilots following what it described as a successful operation at the Merry Hill shopping centre. Council leader Patrick Harley said the authority was embracing “groundbreaking technologies” to help combat anti-social behaviour, with drones supporting police operations through facial recognition and thermal imaging.
The council recently introduced a Public Spaces Protection Order around Merry Hill, enabling fines of up to £100 for a range of anti-social activities. North Yorkshire Fire Service Turns to Drones in Wildfire Prevention Drive

Eyes in the Sky for a Changing Coastline
