Update to Poland’s Drone Insurance Rules

Recreational and commercial drone pilots with Polish flags – Update to Poland’s Drone Insurance Rules

While the rules for drone operators are relatively consistent across the EU member states, each country within the EU can impose their own drone regulations, and Poland has recently made changes to their drone rules that you need to be aware of.

What are the New Drone Rules in Poland?

According to Poland Insight, on 13th November 2025, new regulations came into force in Poland under the Act of 24th January 2025, which amends the Aviation Law and Journal of Laws 2025, item 179. The new rules make it mandatory for all drone operators with drones weighing between 250 g and 20 kg to hold Third Party Liability insurance that covers any damage caused by their flights.

Who Do the New Drone Rules Apply To?

The new drone rules apply to anyone flying a drone within the weight limits mentioned above in Poland, regardless of the reason you choose to fly a drone for recreational or commercial purposes. It’s also important to note that these rules don’t just apply to residents of Poland; if you plan to visit Poland, it is your responsibility as an operator to ensure you are operating within local aviation laws, rules and regulations, so if you’re visiting Poland and wish to fly a drone that weighs between 250 g and 20 kg, you’ll need Third Party Liability insurance as a bare minimum.

The new rules state that your insurance must be in place no later than the day before your first drone operation, so forward planning is key to ensuring you fly in a compliant way – having the appropriate insurance in place is a must.

How Much Insurance Do You Need to Fly a Drone in Poland?

The new rules for flying a drone in Poland state that the minimum guaranteed sum for a policy with a coverage period of up to 12 months is 50,000 SDR (Special Drawing Rights), or roughly £53,789 or €61,290*. You may be pleased to know that at Coverdrone, our policies provide a minimum of 750,000 SDR, or roughly £806,829 or €919,343 (at the time of writing*).

What are Special Drawing Rights (SDRs)?

In case you’re unaware, a Special Drawing Right (SDR) is an international reserve asset that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) created for use by IMF members instead of an actual currency value tied to a specific country. SDR isn’t a currency itself; instead, its value is determined by the value of the following five major currencies:

  • British pound sterling (GBP)
  • S. dollars (USD)
  • The Euro (EUR)
  • Japanese yen (JPY)
  • Chinese renminbi (RMB)

It’s for this reason that our SDR exceeds the legal minimum required in places like Poland. While the conversion rate for SDR valuation can often remain stable, it can fluctuate at other times due to the currencies used in its valuation. To ensure you have sufficient cover, we set a higher minimum SDR on our policies.

As stated above, the minimum cover you require to be compliant when flying a drone weighing between 250g and 20kg is Third Party Liability. However, if you wish to cover your equipment, are a commercial operator, or have specific use cases (such as BVLOS), you may need additional insurance.

What Happens if You Fly Without Insurance in Poland?

If you fly your drone without insurance in Poland, beyond the financial risk to you and your equipment in the event of an incident, you could face a fine of up to zł4,000 (around £830/€947/$1,666AUD/$1,911NZD/$1528CAD at the time of writing), regardless of how safely you fly.

Coverdrone director Andrew Heath has the following to say:

“These changes to drone regulation in Poland will help to ensure that everyone is able to operate within a safer flying environment, particularly as drone use becomes increasingly popular. At Coverdrone, we’ve always prided ourselves on providing insurance products that fit the real-world needs of drone operators that reflect the world we live in, so we’re pleased that even with this change in Poland, the policies we offer provide sufficient levels of cover to stay compliant, provided drone operators fly safely and abide by local aviation rules and regulations.”
