Recreational Policy

Explore the answers to common questions about Coverdrone’s recreational policies.

What Does The Recreational Drone Policy Cover?

Our recreational drone insurance is designed for hobbyist pilots who want peace of mind while flying for fun. The policy typically includes public liability cover (in case your drone accidentally causes damage or injury), as well as optional cover for your drone and related equipment in case of accidental damage, loss or theft. For a full list of what is covered, please visit our products page.

The registration is free and it creates your Coverdrone account so that you can log back in later to choose a period of cover.

In general, aviation authorities have worked to the following guidelines, and these are the guidelines on which we have built our policies:

Commercial – our commercial policy allows you to use your drone and equipment for paid or unpaid work, whether that payment is direct or indirect. It is also compliant with EC785/2004 and issue Aviation Liabilities in addition to Public Liability (if this cover is selected).

Recreational – for “sport or recreational” purposes only. A recreational flight would NOT include paid or unpaid work whether that is direct or indirect (such as imagery being used on another organisation’s website or social media).

As long as you are flying within the rules and regulations and have any relevant permissions/qualifications/licences that are required then our policy will cover you. To find out more, we recommend that you contact your local aviation authority or training centre to find out what you need to fly.

Public liability insurance is included as an option for our recreational policies. This protects you if your drone causes damage to property or injures someone. Public liability cover starts at £1 million.

You can choose from a range of liability cover limits, starting from £1 million. Higher levels are available if needed – just select the level of cover that best suits you when getting a quote.

No, you can choose to insure for just liability only if you wish. You can always add any equipment onto the policy later if you need to.

As long as you have opted to include equipment cover, we cover the drone whilst it is in flight.

If you have selected equipment cover, policy coverage would extend to disappearance which would include the term ‘flyaway’.

If you have selected equipment cover, your equipment is covered whether in transit, in storage or in flight.

Yes. If you select equipment cover when setting up your policy, your drone and related items such the control station, data links, telemetry, communications, navigation equipment, and all of the associated support equipment necessary to operate the drone. If the drone is being controlled by a laptop, iPad, or tablet device, this can be covered for accidental damage, loss or theft (mobile phones are not included). This includes incidents that happen in transit or while in storage.

Yes. You can insure a range of items including the control station, data links, telemetry, communications, navigation equipment, and all the associated support equipment necessary to operate the drone(s). If the drone(s) is being controlled by a laptop, iPad or tablet device (excluding mobile phones) these can also be included.

You can insure someone else’s drone equipment under your Coverdrone policy by adding it as hired-in (non-owned) equipment. You will need to have a hiring agreement with the owner of the drone.

If you have Public Liability covered on your policy, this will be effective for the non-owned drone whilst you use it.

For short term policies (up to and including one month), you may cancel the policy provided it hasn’t started yet. Longer term policies may be cancelled once they have started. We offer refunds on a pro-rata basis subject to any fees outlined in our terms of business. We do not offer policy pausing.

It’s simple to upgrade. Just log in to your Coverdrone account and amend your policy.

Your policy remains in full force until the expiry date, irrespective of whether or not you have made a claim. If you’ve had replacement equipment as part of your claim, you will need to add the details of your new equipment to your policy to ensure you are still covered.
