Ensuring your drone insurance policy is up to date isn’t just good admin; it’s key to making sure your cover works as expected. If your details or policy schedule are out of date, this may delay the handling of a claim and, in some circumstances, affect its settlement.

We’ve put together a list of five simple things you can do to keep your details up to date (as well as a helpful checklist you can download and keep) and help ensure you have appropriate cover while operating your drone.

Please note that the following guide is intended to help Coverdrone customers keep their policy up to date, but it also contains information that Drone Insurance customers from other providers may find useful. Please be aware that policy-specific details only relate to Coverdrone policies.

1. Update Your Drone Details When You Change Equipment

If you upgrade your drone, purchase new equipment, or retire an older model, let your insurance provider know. Many Drone Insurance policies, including Coverdrone policies, require that you provide specific details about the drone(s) you want to cover. You can also add your serial number(s). A common mistake we see at Coverdrone is that someone assumes a new drone they wish to use is covered, without letting us know they want to include it on their policy.

At Coverdrone, updating or changing your drone details is as simple as logging in to your online account and adding a new drone. It only takes a few minutes and helps ensure your policy is up to date.

2. Check Your Flying Purposes Still Match Your Policy

Whether you started flying recreationally and are now doing commercial work, or your business focus has shifted to incorporate BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations, you need to make sure you’re clear up-front whether you intend to use your drone for commercial or recreational use, and your insurance policy reflects how you operate your drone at present.

It’s important to be accurate and upfront about what you use your drone for, so your cover is valid and appropriate. If, for example, your policy states that it is a recreational policy and you use it for commercial purposes, it may not reflect how you operate your drone, and your cover may not be suitable or protect you as expected.

If you expect that your drone operations will shift from recreational to commercial use, ensure you obtain the appropriate cover. At Coverdrone, if you have a Recreational Drone Insurance policy with us, our Support Team can help you if you need to change to a Commercial Drone Insurance policy, helping you stay covered.

3. Update Your Contact or Business Details

While a Commercial Drone Insurance policy at Coverdrone already covers all operators in your organisation, subject to policy terms and conditions and the operator(s) being legal and compliant, it’s important to keep your core business details accurate. This includes your trading name, registered address, contact email, and phone number. These details are used to issue documents, contact you in the event of a claim, and ensure regulatory alignment.

You can quickly update these details in your Coverdrone dashboard by logging in to your account. Doing so can prevent delays and keep your policy running smoothly.

4. Adjust Your Cover as Your Business Evolves

Has your business begun operating in new locations? Are you expanding internationally? Are you adding higher-value equipment to your fleet? Do you need to increase your Public Liability limit? As your business grows and evolves, it’s only natural that your Commercial Drone Insurance requirements will adjust, too.

At Coverdrone, you can request changes to your policy at any time during your policy term to reflect your business growth. Having the option to scale up without starting from scratch helps you stay agile.

If you are expanding internationally, you may be pleased to know that if you’re already a Coverdrone customer, you may already have the cover you need. We offer worldwide cover as standard, subject to policy terms, conditions, operating a legal and compliant flight in the region, and certain excluded territories.

5. Regularly Review Your Policy Cover

It can be beneficial to set a reminder to review your Drone Insurance policy before renewal, especially if your policy auto-renews. You might be paying for cover you no longer need, or you might spot something you need to add to your policy for the next period of cover.

Whether you’re a solo recreational flyer or a growing commercial team, keeping your policy current and accurate can mean less risk, less stress, and a smoother claims experience if anything ever goes wrong.
